Mieczysław Wolfke

Mieczysław Wolfke (1883 – 1947) was a Polish physicist.
He did pioneering work on x-ray microscopy that helped to lay the foundations for the development of holography〔Wolfke M, 1920, "Uber die Moglichkeit der optischen Abbildung vom Molekulargittern", (Google translation - "About the possibility of optical imaging of molecular lattices") Physikische Zeitschrft, 21, 495-7〕〔Hariharan P, 1996, Optical Holography, Cambridge University Press, ISBN 0-521-43965-5〕
He graduated from high school five classes in Czestochowa, and then continued his studies in Sosnowiec. In the years 1902-1907 he studied at the University of Liège and the Sorbonne in Paris. In 1910 he received his doctorate in Wroclaw and habilitated at the Albert Einstein at the University of Zurich in 1913, his work concerned the theory of image formation in the microscope.
In the years 1922-1939 Professor of Warsaw University of Technology. From 1923 he was a member of the Academy of Technical Sciences, since 1927 a member of the Warsaw Scientific Society, since 1932 corresponding member of the Polish Academy of Sciences (PAU). In the years 1930-1934 he served as President of the Polish Physical Society. In the years 1921-1928 worked with low-temperature laboratory in Leiden, led by prof. Heike Kamerlingh Onnes.
In the years 1931-1934 Masonic Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of the National Polish .
Married to Agnes Ritzmann, had three children - two sons and a daughter.
He died in 1947 in Zurich, where he went as a delegate of the Polish government to purchase research equipment.
